General Definition of Work The primary purpose of this position is to prevent the spread of communicable diseases to the residents of Pender County through early detection and intervention, primary prevention and community awareness and education. This position serves as backup to the Communicable Disease nurse and the Immunization Coordinator

Essential Functions - Work with the Communicable Disease Nurse to provide follow-up, investigation and surveillance of all reportable communicable diseases including contact investigation and electronic reporting through NCEDSS.
- Provideeducationandinterventionsthroughscreening,interviewingandcounseling.
- Educate the public in primary prevention of communicable diseases. This includes but is not limited to media.
- Work with the Communicable Disease Nurse to keep statistics on Communicable Diseases reported in the county and share information with the Nursing Supervisor, DON, Director of Health and Human Services, and Epi Team.
- Assistinconductingbi-annualEpi-TeamMeetings.Ensureminutesarekeptforeachmeeting.
- Work with the Communicable Disease Nurse and Preparedness Coordinator to set-up and implement a Respiratory Protection Program and to provide annual training.
- STD, HIV, TB, Rabies services to all citizens regardless of county of residence on a walk-in basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education & Experience Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; considerable knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed; general knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health.
Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others; ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information, and to maintain effective working relationships; ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records; reports, and medical instructions.
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and one year experience in Public Health Nursing; or graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience one of which must have been in public health; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy.
Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing and occasionally requires walking, sitting, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
